Eyes of an Australian Shepherd
Breed standard:
Eyes are brown,
blue, amber or any variation or combination thereof, including flecks and marbling. Almond
shaped, not protruding nor sunken. The blue merles and blacks have black pigmentation on eye
rims. The red merles and reds have liver (brown) pigmentation on eye rims.
Beyond breed standard
There can be numerous eye issues in Australian Shepherds that (I will not go into but will leave a link at the bottom of this page that explains some of the issues) Breeders can minimize the risks of eye problems by testing. Testing available...CAER/CERF (exam performed by Ophthalmologist), PRA(Progressive Retinal Atrophy, Progressive Rod-Cone )CEA (Collie Eye Anolomy), HSF4 (Heridetary Cataracts), and CD(Cone Degeneration) all are Genetically tested
